Is this Spyware?
When my son tries to get on the internet, instead of getting his home page(google)he gets pop up ads wanting to scan for and install anti spyware. I tried changing the home page back to Google in internet tools to no avail. Do you think installing and running Adaware and/or Spybot would cure the problem?

Running adaware and spybot would be a good idea, and if that doesn't catch what is doing it then you can always post a Hijack This log (sticky about it in the Security forum).

When I run various spyware detectors, references to Alexa are found and removed but as soon as I connect to the internet they're back. Since this is a new install of Win 98SE, I will get all the updates from MS and see if that helps. If all else fails, I suppose I could reformat and start over.

Sure sounds like a Hijacker is resident. There are several out there that can be a real bugger to remove. Follow the thread amose has linked as your first option. When you scan/post your Hijack This! log, the bad-boy should be revealed.

Alexa is no big deal, it's certainly not a hijacker.

I think I fixed it...by deleting two offending registry entries found by Adaware.

Now download the MS Antispy and take a look at all the stuff that AdAware and Spybot miss.

I have MS Antispy on my computer, and I agree with you about missed stuff. Will get to that soon at my son's house along with 98SE updates.
