I am having trouble logging in to an FTP site from just some of my computers. When I go to the FTP site the windows logon as box comes up asking for a user name and password. I enter the username and password, some of our computers will log in as the correct user others logon anonymously. If use the tool bar file logon as it wiil log me on as the correct user. Why does the first logon as box not always log me in
.

Depends on what URL you're using to get into the FTP site. For example, if you use ftp://ftp.siteaddress.com to go to the site then you are telling IE to go to the FTP site and login anonymously.
However if you have a username and password I would suggest using: ftp://username@ftp.siteaddress.com/ that will prompt a username/password box everytime. You should know that, ftp://username:password@ftp.siteaddress.com/ will log you in with your username and password. However, I wouldnt recommend this, especially if you are on a public computer, because the username and password will be saved in the history list. If you are on a private machine and no risk of a compromise then by all means use the aformentioned format. HTH |
