Hi,
Can you give us a bit more info? What are your system specs? What OS are you running? What version of Quicktime and Media are you using? Does it lock when you do anything i.e listen to music, videoclips etc., or just with certain clips? HTH |

well the new versions of windows media player and quicktime use up a lot of system resources... especially those annoying graphics on media player. What versions are you using?

Make sure you don't have tons of programs running in the background... check your system tray, and make sure nothing you don't need is in it. I just opened up Quicktime 5, RealPlayer 6, And Media Player 7 (Ha 5, 6, 7) and no system freezes, even having them run all at once. I'm running a PII 333, so your CPU should kick my a**, and it seems as if you have more RAM than me (128 compared to my 64). There are possibilities that virtual memory can't be freed up (go to the post in Tips and Tricks labled "Attention Burners" - there is some info on organizing system resources there). Your CPU could be getting a little hot so you might want to check to make sure your fans are working properly etc.
A few other questions arise... like where are you downloading these files from. Streaming audio/video will sometimes have a bad effect on your computer, usually I don't freeze, but ocassionally it happens. If it's a file on your computer... test it on other computers to make sure the same things doesn't happen. If the same thing does happen, it's most likely a corrupted file. But it sounds to me like it's a chronic things, and I doubt every file you have is corrupted (unless you have some virus). Try this... turn your computer on and immediately try to load one of those media applications of yours... does it work? If so try it later on after a few hours... it could be... 1) your running low of system resources from opening and closing applications so many times (refer to Tips and tricks >> "Attention Burners") 2) your computer is getting hot... make sure fans are working properly, thermal grease is between the CPU and heatsink... the heatsink is there. Sorry to leave you hanging... I'm not sure if your OS has anything to do with it. I'm running Win98 and showing no problems. |

ITS NONE OF WHAT YOU SAID
thank you for your thoughts but its none of the things you said.
My fan works perfectly, systray only has 4 or 5 things in it max. none of the files i am downloading are dodgy coz ive downloaded them on other computers. i tried what u said about turning the computer of and on and then loading up one of the guilty programs, the results are:- quicktime - locked up/system freeze straight away (didn't even get a chance to load a file) mediaplayer - opened up fine, but when i opened a file it locked up realplayer - again this opened up fine, but when i tried to open a file my hard drive went off to the moon and didn't come back. all this is making me want to throw my pc of the roof of my house!!!

Sorry I couldn't be more help, I'm guessing you use the 1gig harddrive for Windows right? Maybe make sure your Virtual Memory has enough breathing room (if it's in the same drive as windows it could be being choked for space).
If you have a generic HD that might also be the problem. Is your computer, or any of your parts on warranty? If so I'd try to get replacements or get the components cheked out by the manufacturer. Good Luck! |
