How do you include gifs in email, forums, etc.

I'd like to include jpegs, gifs and so on in my emails and forum posts. I tried a free image hosting site, but all it did was include the URL link to the image on their server. I'd like the actual gif to play in my email. How would I go about this? Thanks.

If you sent me an email with an embedded gif or jpeg, I'd send you back a nasty message. Just attach it, that's a lot more considerate.

Forums generally have image tags - this one does - but read the rules before you post any. Posting large inline images is frowned upon here.

To do that, just attach them. That's best anyway, because not all e-mail clients support inline images - and this feature can be disabled on those that do. Not all people think that an e-mail should look like a webpage, and I'm personally very anal about that.

2 ways - simply attach the files, or upload them to your hosting site and provide links in the body of your e-mail.

In OE you simply "Insert" them instead of Attaching them.

Please excuse my ignorance, but why is it considered inconsiderate? The email size is virtually the same, and when trying to help friends / family with computer problems via email, it sure is a lot more easy for them to follow when the jpegs are Inserted / inline with the text as the photo(s) is with the explaination. I'm just curious as I don't understand why one way would be inconsiderate over the other. ??

edit: ps: I've got to learn to type faster! -- I think I see your reasoning now (as there are posts that weren't there a moment ago), as you mention some email client can't handle inline photos. Luckily, everybody I communicate with has one that does.

It takes longer to download the email having inline images than it would by just attaching the pic to your email. I understand that it is inconsiderate cause I do it to my brother, Kov-Ice, all of the time and he gets on me constantly. He only has a 56k connection and cant get any better because of where he lives at.

I also believe that OE downloads the 'attached' or 'inserted' pics to the email automatically. Right? Whenever someone sends me pics that are 'attached' when I open the email they are shown already when scrolling down through the email.

Thanks. So how do I insert a jpeg or gif into say Juno or Hotmail web based email clients?

I block inline images, because that's a common tactic used by spammers to verify that you have actually read their junk. Ever hear of "web bugs"? They get a positive response, guess where your address is going? More spam lists. THAT'S what I mean about consideration. Send me all the attachments and links you want but inline images go right into the trash can.

Really? Quite interesting. I had never heard of that until now. Thanks glc. That is a common tactic for spammers to use and get you on more SPAM lists. Wow... Glad I dont get any junk mail anymore...

I appreciate all the "warnings" about inline image posting, but does anyone know how to do it?

Very interesting on the first part; I'd never have guessed the D/L time was any different since the data size is the same. My sister, and others, also have dailup but never made mention of such. On the second part, ya, in OE at least, the pics come up either way, whether inline or attached.

I've never done it in Hotmail, so I looked around a little. I can find the attachment method only. I sent myself a test Hotmail email and the animated gifs came thru as attachments (but were automatically shown in the email as AK mentions above).

I have Juno installed on one of my machines out in the work shed. Next time I fire it up I'll see if I can figure it out....

Actually, no I haven't heard of web bugs, so I Googled it. I read several different pages on them (for others who are unfamiliar with them, here is a very short explanation ) Web bugs have been in banner ads for a long time and seems to be a Web page item mostly. They have also taken on the form of a 1x1 pixal image. In emails it appears that you'd have to limit yourself to pure text emails and that is too great of a sacrifice for me in these modern times. Virtually every email I recieve has pics in it, or different size and color fonts for clarity and emphasis, or something bolded or underlined. It would also mean that I'd have to give up on "spam" that I wish to recieve, like Newegg's weekly specials and the like. Since they are / can be 1x1 pixal in size, I don't see how one would even notice if they had a bug in an email. It's nice to know they exist, though.

Not a sacrifice for me at all. I use Pegasus in the classic (not 3 pane) interface which is pure text based, however, I do have the option of viewing HTML mail if I choose. It's handled on the Attachments tab. Go ahead, call me a dinosaur, but I have zero malware problems due to this and other things I'm anal about - such as not using IE unless I HAVE to.

I wouldn't call anyone dinosaur for doing what works and I'm fairly sure you know I wasn't implying such (specially since I'm probably older ) (Well, maybe in jest I would.) I understand wanting zero malware. I just cleaned a system that had over 1,500 hits found in Adware SE alone. On my system I had only a hand full of tracking cookies, which don't bother me.

Should note also that Outlook 2003 by default prevents images from showing in the email message. You can right-click the image to download them if desired.

Some of the recent Windows vulnerabilities used a jpeg in an email message as a means of transmitting viruses.

I think also that when you insert something in OE that if you insert it as file, it is attached but if you insert it as an image it displays via HTML in the message.
