Ready to pitch DSL -- HELP!!!!
Okay, I'm really getting p!$$ed. Against my better judgement, I went with Ameritech/SBC dsl primarily because everything I've read on the 'net seems to point to telcos really know their stuff when it comes to dsl. Well, that's a load of hooey.
Got my self-install kit last week but have not been able to install because the connection was not up until today (2 days late). Put the CD in the tray and started to install the software for Enternet300. Software does not completely install (drivers install, but no profile manager). Tried various methods of installation (uninstalling/rebooting each unsuccessful time) including exiting/disabling EVERYTHING in my start menu -- still no profile manager. I even uninstalled my NIC, re-installed my NIC and tried to install the Enternet300 software -- nothing. Called Ameritech (not thier thrid party support who had no clue what I was even talking about but the real macoy) and was told that because I built my computer myself I obviously did something wrong and that's why it's not installing. After staring at the phone in disbelief for about 30 seconds, I asked this guy how he could justify saying that. He said "that's just the way it is". Okay....... Called Efficient Networks (the makers of Enternet300) and the best they can come up with is there is some driver conflict. So I re-booted and enabled bootlog.txt to see if all their drivers load up -- they do according to the list they gave me. The only problem still is no profile manager. The best part is -- no one can tell me what *.exe the profile manager shortcut that is supposed to be on my desktop points to. I've tried all the executables in the installed folder and no go. So....does ANYONE have this POS on thier system?? If so, can you tell me where that shortcut points? Any help here is greatly appreciated. -Craig |

I had it for about two days, saw more blue screens and lockups in that two days than I've seen since, so promptly made a coaster out of the CD it was on.
Get raspppoe, be done with it. http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~normanb/ I only call SBC to report an outage. When they start their little "lets trobleshoot your connection, are you using Win98?" schpeel, I interrupt and demand a supervisor . Luckily, the network ops people with SBC aren't bad and keep things working, so those rant calls to SBC are pretty rare.Xayd Last edited by Xayd; 05-11-2001 at 04:49 PM. |

Ditto on RASPPPOE, was using Bell's connection manager with many headaches, disconnects and BSOD's, switched to RASPPPOE and haven't had a problem since.

Thanks guys!!! Up and running in 10 minutes. Sure is nice to have DSL again -- now I've just got to re-install the home network so my wife doesn't get jelous of my download speeds
![]() Xayd, as I recall, you said I can just enter my username/password in my Linksys and enable PPPoE in the router and I'll still be good to go? -Craig |

Yeap, that should be it. SBC pppoe is as standard as they come. All you should need in there is username and pass.
