FTP Access Problem
I just installed an FTP program on one of my computers which is behind a router. I made sure to forward port 21 to the computer with the program installed on it and changed all the settings in the program that needed to be changed, but when I try to access it, it says that Windows can not access the folder.
I check my ISPs website, Optimum, and didn't see anything about them blocking that port. What could it be? Thanks in advance.

Where are you trying to access it from? Inside or outside your LAN? Be sure to use the private IP when inside your LAN, and the WAN IP when outside.
Also, what browser are you using? I use Bulletproof FTP and I sometimes have problems accessing it w/Firefox. Try using IE if you aren't already. You don't have a software firewall up do you?

I've tried using both IE and Firefox, as well as an FTP client. None of them worked. I've tried from outside the network using the WAN IP, and wasn't able to connect.
Any other ideas? Thanks again |

1) Do you have any software firewalls (through XP, or an antivirus that is blocking calls to port 21 of your computer?)
2) Are you using passive FTP (pasv) to connect to your ftp daemon? On internet explorer, for example, go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > ADVANCED > checkmark use passive ftp |

Should the DHCP on the router be disabled, so the IP doesn't change, or can it be left enabled?

I'd disable DHCP and set a static IP. If you have port 21 forwarded to your LAN IP set by DHCP, it's always going to be changing.
