Cable... our telco company thinks that they are "all that and more", but truth be known, they suck compared to cable.

@work (where I spend most of my time) we have a 10Mbit cable connection and a 1Mbit leased line.

@home I have a 2Mbit ADSL connection.

All connections are very good.

Cable, with a couple of tweaks from Speedguide.net downloads average about 200KB/second (that's kilobytes).

Multilink. It rocks at a solid 92. At this time I have no desire for the others (cable or dsl).

I've tried the tweaks, but it still downloads like a dog. My connection at school is much better. If I could I'd switch to DSL.

Count me as a lucky DSL user. 1.5 Mbps down and 384 Kbps up. I'm moving at the end of the month just on the other side of the CO (same distance... lucky me!) so we'll see if I still get the same performance.

cobra: It's really easy, just post a new message and check the little "I want a poll" checkbox at the bottom, it will take you to a new page where you can make the poll.

Looks like broadband is the winner so far. By the way, I was the first to vote, DSL here.

I live in a bandwidth ghetto. DSL: Too far. Cable: "5 to 10 years". Wireless: Too many trees between me and the Sears Tower (neighbor's yard). Satellite: Too many trees in *my* yard. ISDN: No new residential ISDN available from Ameriwreck in this town. Multilink: If I get a second line, they will pair gain me. T1: You gotta be kidding me - it ain't worth $700 a month to go fast.

Solution: Deal with my stable 38.6 dialup and do big downloads at the office on the DSL and burn CD's.

Hi didk63,

To be able to use multilink you will need 2 modem (preferably same make and kind), two phone lines, and an ISP that supports it. Some ISP's will let you log on with the same username/password twice, if your doesn't you will also need two accounts with your ISP. Also I believe you need win98 as an OS, not sure whether it is supported in NT or win95. HTH

I have @home. I am one of the lucky ones. Older neighborhood, with few users on my node. I was actually the first one on. YAHOO!!!! LOL download speeds average around 250kb/second. Best speed was clocked consistent at 700+ mb/second. And I too have used the tweaks at speedguide.net.

512Kbps Cable @ Home...OC-3 backbone @ work...average the two together based upon time used and I get ~T3 speed.

There are 2 kinds of satellite - one way and two way. One way is almost worthless - you connect and upload with a modem at 28.8. Two way isn't bad, but the lag can make games unplayable and cause telnet sessions to time out. Starband is prolly the best out there, but it ain't too cheap. You have to do it one of 2 ways - buy the rig from Radio Shack which includes a Compaq PC, or from a Dish Network retailer, which includes a USB adapter. The dish and installation is a few hundred dollars and you are locked into MSN for your ISP. It's $70 a month unless you also get the Dish Top 150 TV package - which is $100 a month for the whole deal. It's the only game in town in a lot of places.
