Wireless Internet Question

hi, i want to set up a wireless internet at my house and I was wondering on how I could go about doing it. Is there any extra fee? I have sbc dsl at my house and i can't run a network cable to the computer in my basement (unless i would drill holes but I really don't want to do that). So please correct me if i'm wrong:

I go buy a wireless router, connect that to my home network router, and do something with my computer in the basement, (this one is a DESKTOP computer) and then waaallaa there is my wireless internet... I am probably wrong I just wanted to make sure before I bought anything. Plz help me on this i need internet on the computer down stairs.

If you already have a router than you need a wireless access point - not a wireless router. This plugs into your router and then you install a wireless card (or if there are no pci slots a usb adapter) in the basement computer and you should have access after configuring windows.

I can't say if you will get a good signal in the basement though.

First of all, please list the equipment you have. Do you have a Speedstream (or other brand) modem and a 3rd party router (such as Linksys), or are you using the SBC 2Wire combo modem/router kit? Exact model numbers would help, along with how things are presently hooked up. If you have a 2Wire, it's already wireless capable. All you should need in the basement is a wireless PCI card - and possibly a high gain antenna if the reception is lousy.

Ok here's the specs

Hey glc thanx for answering... I have a speed stream modem dsl modem connected to my computer. ERm, all the info I have is that it is speedstream 5100 ethernet adsl modem from efficient networks. part number 060-E142-A01 The modem is connected to my primary computer which then connects to a separate little box which I think is called a "router." THis box is a D-link 10/100 fast ethernet switch. I have this router as a network to my secondary computer which is almost right next to my primary computer. My third computer, (the one in the basement) has a motherboard lan spot on it and is the one I built (specs on my sig). I hope that's enough info thanx again 4 helping me on this i really appreciate it!

You do not have a multi-IP capable router. You need one, so buy a wireless router. Your Speedstream is the new triple mode model, log into it (192.168.0.1) and switch it to the "bridge" mode. Connect it to the WAN port of a wireless router, then plug the 2 wired computers into switch ports on the router, log into the router and set it up for PPPoE - store your username and password - and set up the wireless section. Install a wireless card in the basement computer. You do not need your D-Link switch, but keep it - you can "daisy chain" it to the router if you add more wired computers than the router has ports for.

Suggested router and wireless card:

If reception in the basement is bad, connect one of these antennas to the card and aim it at the router:

thanks glc

Okay so i will buy the first two items on newegg right now. After I recieve it, I have to exchange my router with the wireless one, type in my ip address or whatever that thing is on my browser, change mode to bridge, and then the next part i'm not clear on (srry ima bigtime dummie) pppoe? what's that? then after that plug my card into my computer in the basement, and boom there's my internet connection? ok sorry to make it so long and everything but first of all i need help on the PPPoE thingy. Next don't u have to set up a "network" or does this not require it? because we had to go through this long thing with my secondary computer when I was hooking it up with my primary one. third, how do i know if i am getting bad reception? will it just not work at all, or will it b slow, etc. thanks for helping me on this i was wanting to get internet on my old computer for a long long time!

1. You do not have a router. You have a switch.
2. BEFORE disconnecting it, log into the Speedstream as I indicated and make the change. It's in the Advanced section.
3. After this is done, connect the Speedstream to the Linksys Internet port, connect the wired computers to numbered ports on the router. Log into the Linksys at 192.168.1.1, no username, password admin, on the setup page, choose PPPoE and put your username and password in, set it to Keepalive. Verify internet access on the wired computers, then set up the wireless section.
