Problem using Mirc?
Everytime I try connecting with Mirc I get a "Cannot find firewall address" message. Anyone know what that means? I tried disabling my firewall but it didn't make any difference. Thanks.

Open mIRC, go to mIRC Options, expand the Connect category by clicking on the plus sign to its left, then click on Firewall. Set the "Firewall support" field to "None" on the drop-down list, click OK.
See if that fixes things. If you're trying to connect mIRC at work, though, it's probable that has been disabled by the IT department and the chances of getting it re-enabled are slim. Employers generally frown on their employees using company equipment, company networks, company bandwidth and company time to chat.

You're welcome.
I don't know how experienced you are in the world of IRC so I'll add this caution: IRC and real life have at least one thing in common...strange people who do strange things. Be at least as cautious around the strangers on IRC as you should be around strangers in real life.

Thanks for the advise. I'm mainly using it to talk to other Linux users.
I seem to be having another problem. I'm able to connect to the particular forum and channel I want but it asks me to register my IRC nickname and auto identify? When I do, it tells me my user name is already taken. I try this several time, then I'll connect and the other members in the channel can see my words. Weird. Is there a simpler way to access IRC besides Mirc or XChat? Thanks. |

The simplest thing to do is choose another nick and keep doing that until you find one that's not in use. Then register it and enable "nick kill" so nobody else can use it on that chat net.
if you really want that particular nick, then add a symbol. For example, if the nick you want is JohnDoe, try JohnDoe~ or JohnDoe^ or JohnDo* or...well, you get the idea. To a computer, all four of those are entirely different. It won't let you connect when the nick you've chosen is currently in use by somebody else on that server. Apparently, they disconnect so you're finally able to get on with the nick you want. |
