Startup Problem
I thank you in advance for any useful advice you can offer. The problem is that when I start up two web pages automatically pop up and I must close them before proceeding. I am not online when this happens and I have checked the configuration for any unknown programs which may be starting up but nothing is visible. Thanks again.

Looks like time to give your computer a spyware/adware check.
Spybot and adaware are both great programs for this and they are freeware. I don't have the exact address for either while I am here at work, but if you search them on google you will get them. If is possible you have spyware/adware on your system that is causing this. These programs and help find and remove it.

Are you using Ad-Aware 1.05 SE with the latest definitions? If you are still using Ad-Aware 6, there hasn't been a definition update in many months, it's discontinued. Try more scanners, such as Spybot Search & Destroy and Microsoft Antispy.
