IP address confusion.

OK, I have a couple of domain names linked to an IP. (216.71.83.21)

If I do a lookup on either of the domains, it will turn up the correct IP.

If I type in the domain, I go to my site.

But I cannot access my site using the IP, in fact the IP "belongs" to another site altogether.

http://216.71.83.21/home.htm

Am I missing something??????

virtual hosting.

netcraft shows the server as being:

Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) FrontPage/4.0.4.3 on Linux

seems like they're using name based virtual hosting. basically, they set up multiple sites on the server and in DNS, then the server sets the DocumentRoot according to which hostname you call, instead of IP based virtual hosting which determines the site by the IP you call.

here's the Apache specific details:

Interesting what a whois search comes up with too.

Whois Search

Connection refused: invalid ip addressThe previous information has been obtained either directly from the
registrant or a registrar of the domain name other than Network Solutions.
Network Solutions, therefore, does not guarantee its accuracy or
completeness.

Whois Server Version 1.3

Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Domain Name: LUST4LENNON.COM
Registrar: TUCOWS, INC.
Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net

Name Server: NS.WESTHOST.NET
Name Server: NS2.WESTHOST.NET

I have never really had much dealings with WestHost. They seem to be a bit pricey for what you get especially if they don't give you your own IP. An IP address can be handy if you have to FTP some files and the DNS server is down.

Burlee.com and Hostway.com seem to be the best hosting services on the net right now.

I think hostway has a better price, but not as many features as burlee. They are about even.

Westhost has been very good, for me.

10 months, 2 sites, 3 domains, 2 emails and never a blackout (at least not when I needed to connect 8-).

I just was "startled" when I switched from one whois server to another and went from seeing my site to seeing someone elses!

I was trying to set up my browser to bypass my local proxy for my site and couldn't get it to work with the IP. When I started looking deeper to find out why I ran into this mess.

At least I'm not crazy (hehe).
