smtp problems

I am trying to set up an email account for a friend on his wireless laptop. His ISP
is comcast, we can get it to receive email fine, yet we cannot get it to send email, it says it cannot connect to SMTP. We have the SMTP server configured correctly at smtp.comcast.net any ideas??

it would help to know which client you are using

does comcast have webmail. if yes, can he send from that?

top choice below is email, click on the client and make sure you have everything correct

sorry forgot to mention that, outlook express is the client, webmail works fine,
just sending outgoing email from the laptop doesn't work, won't connect to SMTP

smtp.comcast.net should work.

I`ve found their tech support to be very responsive and helpful.

try a different email program to see if you can send email with. try downloading mozilla thunderbird www.mozilla.org. its free, so thats always a bonus to use it for your troubleshooting. if you can send with t-bird then the problem is with Outlook Express.

it doesn't say anything on their site, but you could try adding authentication on outgoing server. check outgoing server requires authentication. i know a lot of local ISP's require that

have you called comcast tech support to see if they require the outgoing server to be authenticated? is this a comcast email address, or your own email address that you are having trouble with?

comcast does not require outgoing authentication, yes it is a comcast email address. We tested the address by setting up the same account on his desktop upstairs (on outlook express) that the cable modem is hardwired to, so it appears the wireless connection is the issue, I have never seen this before, SMTP should work. I tried Linksys and Comcast techsupport pages but came up empty.

Linksys Router firewall. Go to http://192.168.1.1 and turn off the firewall and try it.

I fixed the problem, for some reason when connecting to comcasts SMTP server via a wireless connection is does require authentication. I checked the box that says outgoing server requires authentication and put in the username and password and it is happily sending emails now. I have never encountered this before, learn something new everyday. Thanks all for your suggestions.
