makin a dex?

hi

i was just wondering:

you know when you open a domain on the internet (like www.pcmech.com) you actually get taken to www.pcmech.com/index.htm or index.html if this is not present you get taken to what to the best of my knowledge is called a dex (looks like a list of files)
is there anny way to make IE do this even if there is a index.html???

thanks

Many hosts do not allow a directory listing.

It isn't an IE thing. It is a webserver thing. You can make anything although commonly index.htm, index.html, default.htm, default.asp or index.php.

Dex is not the correct term. It is just directory browsing, also set in the server.

so it's not something a server does by default, only if there is no index.html or similar

It is not generally the default to allow directory browsing. If there isn't an index.html or similar and directory browsing is not allowed, you receive a 403 error, which is forbidden.
