Blank Screens in IE

Hi,
Can somebody help me again? I had been using IE, then changed to Firefox. After a few problems with Firefox I went back to IE the problem I now have is blank screens and a permanent egg timer, when I click on links (mainly picture) within a website. They worked fine before I installed firefox. I am using XP and fully updated IE. Something else I have noticed is on the address bar, the web page icon is not recognised. Help

Thanks, I have ran a full virus check and spybot, still have the same prob. I think it may have something to do with Java.
