cable connection woes

I had the same problem a couple of months ago, and it reared it's ugly head again on Sunday and I am at a loss as to what causes it. I had originally (after the last flare up) deduced that it was a sw problem (tpf vs. ZA), mainly because it went away after I removed tiny, but it came back this time w/o Tiny being on my sys.

To recap, for sympathy or advice......

I will be surfing and go to open a site and I lose my connection during (I assume) DNS lookup.

It just searches and searches and never finds anything.

I am then in a blackout. I cannot connect to ANYTHING.

The only remedy is a prolonged power down w/ the modem turned off.

20 minutes or so seems to get me back.

changing ips, rebooting, turning the modem on and off etc will not help.

It comes in spurts (24 hours or so it will keep happening) and then goes away.

In 4 mos, it has happened twice, and like I said, I had thought that it was caused by a sw problem, but that thory has been shot to H^&l this time.

No changes to my system prior to the blackout and no changes seem to recover my connection.

As best as I can tell, whatever causes the connection to be lost (always in the process of lookup) makes me disappear from rr's sight completely.

I can still RECIEVE data (I get the 2 minute IGMPs without fail, but I can not connect to ANYTHING.

any help would be nice, i'm a bit discouraged atm 8-(

98, cable (rr) everything running beautifully, except during these blackouts.

I'm on RR here, too. most of the time I get that problem, RR is messing around with the lines....always when it comes back up I have faster connection speeds than the days prior to the black out, so I have always taken it that they're splitting the nodes up a little bit when they become too saturated. although there is one day that the DNS server was down....I used an IP adress I know is always there to try connecting and was successful.

in my experiences with cable companies, RR is not as good as Cox's @Home....been on RR in CA and in OK and they both sucked. might try calling support, my cable company has a voice recording of any outages on the menu.

Angry Fire Cable Modem

I had the exact same problem with my cable connection. I replaced the cable modem and to my surprise it fixed the problem! This may work for you. Pyro
