LAN - Domain name

Is it possible to have a domain name that only works on a LAN?

So I could have www.testmenow.com and it only works for computers on the LAN?

I'm running apache on a Windows XP Pro system.

I don't think you can, but I would like to.

Thanks

I'm not sure exactly what you are asking, but, hopefully this will answer your question.

Yes, you can run a domain that isn't accessible from the internet. I do that all the time as I run Active Directory on my home lan and it requires both a domain name and dns service. I use the same domain name with my Linux machines too as I run a Samba file server integrated into my AD domain and an Apache web server and a couple of database servers.

There are a few gotcha's that you need to look out for. Name your domain something that will not confuse the internet's dns servers. Using something such as yourdomainname.local works very well. That's what I do on my lan.

You will need to run a dns server on your lan. Set it up to resolve only the addresses in your domain and have it forward all other requests to your ISP's dns servers. Make sure that it won't allow zone tranfers.

Yes, it's possible. To not confuse local domain names and internet names you could use a ".local" ending instead of ".com" especially if you haven't registered the ".com" name. ".local" is specially made for this situation.
