FTP Question
Hey all,
I've been assigned by my department here at MSU to work with a few other students around the world on a I2 (Internet2) project. Some of the work requires that I use the ftp of one of the profs who is overseeing this research/project. My problem is that I cannot log onto the ftp via any ftp client. My ftp client of choice is LeapFTP, so I'll describe what is going on. I'll log on just as I would any other ftp site using the username and password supplied by this professor. I watch the login progess go along, I'll see any current issues/comments for the day, Then I'll see this after login: 230 User logged in, proceed. SYST 215 UNIX Type: LB REST 100 350 Restarting at 100 - send STORE or RETRIEVE in initiate transfer. REST 0 350 Restarting at 0 - send STORE or RETRIEVE to initiate transfer. PWD 257 "/" is current directory. TYPE A 200 Type set to A. PORT 192.,168,1,101,4,7 530 Only client IP address allowed for PORT command. ERROR: Protocol Error This is not good. I need to access this guys computer and can't. I've contacted him via e-mail and he tells me this is the ftp program he has always used and no one else has difficulties logging in. I know the problem is that I'm behind a router because I can log in if I disconnect the router and use PPPoe to get on-line. This is something I don't want to do because the project at hand is fairly big and time consumming for my system, not for me. if I disconnect the router, this leaves my wife (and my studio) no connection to the interent. Is there any way to use my actual IP address rather than the one assigned by my router? As a point of reference, I'm using a Linksys 8 port router. Thanks, -Craig |

Try opening up or mapping the FTP port in the router admin - or put your machine in the DMZ when you need to do FTP. You can also play around with the firewall settings in your FTP client.

God glc, you're a genius. DMZ worked -- I had thought that was only for stuff like if I was hosting something on my network. Works both ways I see.
