Red face Immediate freeze on-line

unit has ME OS Freezes as soon as connection with ISP (dial-up) is established. or very quickly after. Same with either Outlook Express or IE or simply connected to the ISP with neither of the aformentioned programs running.
I have tried a new Agere' modem - same result. I have reloaded windows - The add remove program "repair IE" is not available. This one's got me stumped any ideas will be appreciated - thanks

Did you reformat and install Windows clean, or just reload over the top? If over the top, have you scanned for viruses, trojans, and spyware?

That sure sounds like a clean install to me. Try testing your ram, it can cause freezeups.

A tired old power supply could do it too. What motherboard do you have and what's the brand and wattage of the power supply?

MB is SOYO processor 650 AMD 128 MB PNY 2100 sdram power supply is 300 watt one HD one CD ROM. unit works fine off-line. I'm trying to fix it up for a 75 yr old lady who's "old computer" bit the dust. She'll be on the phone if it hiccups - I'd like to get it solid before I give it to her.

The power supply is new - I've reconfigured "Earthlink Dial-up" Checked the memory by substituting a new stick. Sometimes it'll stay on for nearly a minute (long enough to change web sites from the home page) before it freezes up. I appreciate your input I'm still workin' on it.

Do you have a real hardware based modem to try? Software "winmodems" can be a real headache, especially on older machines and 9x based operating systems. Have you installed all applicable motherboard/chipset drivers?
