email addresses for my website ?
If I build a website called say: parangles.com and I want
an address, say: info@parangles.com , how do I get this address? Is it an additional, add on feature by the company that hosts my website? Is it in anyway directly connected to the website? ie. If I close my site, and cease using the original hosting server, what happens to that email address? Just to make this really clear in my mind - do I really even need to have a site called parangles.com in order to have an email address: sales@parangles.com ? Thanks ! Chris. |

usually a good idea to purchase the domain name for the future if you decide in the future to setup a website.
check it out at www.godaddy.com

Your e-mail addresses will most likely be the same as the domain for the website.
For example: www.pcmech.com is the registered domain here, so the e-mail addresses are fakeaddress(at)pcmech.com Even if you just want the e-mail address, you will have to register the domain so you can use it. This is just my understanding as I've only done it a couple of times, but I don't think you can own an e-mail address without buying the domain name.

Your new webhost will give you a limited (or unlimited) number of email addresses, it would just depend on what package you pick that they are offering. They would be all related to the initial domain that your hosting with them.

Sorry! My question was obviously badly worded- let me restate it :
I have a website that is terribly orphaned- dead links, outof date prices etc. I want to shut it down completely on the existing server, cancel my account with them and discard that website completely this week. I am teaching myself and am building a new website which I will put it up on my own or another server, maybe in a months time, with the same domain name. Question: What will happen to the email accounts like sales@mybusinees.com after I shut down the website and cancel the account at the existing server? what can I do easily for a month or more to ensure that all the email accounts don't stop working ? Can I shut down the website and still leave the account at the server till I've got my new site up? If not what should I do ? Put up an 'under construction' during the interim? Bottom line is I still don't understand the connection between the actual site and the dot com email address. Theoretically could someone register a domain name and not have, never have, an actual website, but still have email addresses with that registered domain name ? Stryker:" so the e-mail addresses are fake address(at)pcmech.com" This is what I am getting at. What does 'fake' address mean ? Thanks Chris. |

You can absolutely have an e-mail address while showing just a "dummy" under construction page. BUT... you will have to pay the hosting fees and stuff, as well as the fee to keep the domain active.
Generally, you will buy/rent your domain name for a set fee from a provider, and have to pay a monthly/yearly fee to keep it under your name. If you let your ownership run out, it's back up for grabs for anyone to take it. When you register your domain and activate your web space, the package you buy from your provider will have an option for the number of e-mail addresses you can have. You can then make them whatever you like using the domain you registered. The easiest way to work this is to have a page displayed to any visitors that happen to come across your page that tells them it's not complete. You can then have a subfolder with the site you're working on so you can see it, but people most likely won't find it (something like www.mybusiness.com/my_new_version). This way, you can visit the page to see how it looks but it isn't really public unless you give it to someone on purpose (they would have to physically type in the entire link to see it, which is unlikely by accident). Finally, fakeaddress(at)pcmech.com was just a sample address. I used (at) insead of @ because there are address harvesters on the web that will find e-mail addresses and spam them. I like the folks at pcmech too much to do that to them.

Chris, you can have email addresses without having a website. You will just have to have some kind of account at a host to do so or a mailserver. If you need me to I could probably park it somewhere for you and have the email still active. Email me and let me know what you want and I will see what I can do.

Thanks Stryker. Mairving this is ....travel.com not .....villas.com.
The first is ours, the second one is a friends which I'm no longer involved in. I think she sold it. I'll just put up an 'under construction' sign for a while. I terrified of having 12 agents with no email accounts even for an hour. Cheers, Chris. |

Well when you transfer any domain, you can have some problems with email. Usually what I do to minimize this problem is to make the DNS changes late on Friday so if there are any problems they will be encountered when things are slower. So there is the potential for some email being missed but it is somewhat minimal. The best way to do this is to not shutdown the site on the old server until you have setup the mail accounts on the new server. I usually give it about a week and check the other sites email via webmail.
Doesn't really matter whict site it is, I'll still help you if you need it. |
