AOL Problem
Have Win'98 installed on a computer with 64Mb ram and 6G hd. with 4G of free space.
Tried to install AOL ver 6 with no luck. Have a copy of AOL 4 that works fine on a older machine with less resources so I installed that. The problem is that the DL of AOL ver 6 to the AOL site worked fine and then it did the install and ran to completion. But will not work at all, will not even make the connection to AOL. The AOL ver 4 I had no problem with the install but all I can do is check my mail on AOL. Can not get web pages to load, all attempts to go to web sites come back with the Unable to load page or 101 and 104 error messages(don't remember which ones exactly anymore). Thought maybe that it was on the server end but AOL denies that. AOL instructions are to just about rip the box down and rebuild ie. not enough Hd space, not enough ram, re-install the OS, well you get the picture. Both ver of AOL are on the computer currently. Temp's and internet temp files are cleaned out and just did a scan and a defrag before the install. Any suggestions on how I can get AOL, hopefully, ver 6 up and running without rebuilding and reloading everything?

Uninstall all versions of AOL after saving your address books, downloads, etc. Go into control panel - networks and remove ALL components. Reboot, then install AOL 6 from a CD. If you don't have an AOL 6 CD, I am sure you have a friend or neighbor with one they haven't thrown out yet - they are literally *everywhere*.
Note that this procedure will prevent you from using another dialup ISP, but AOL should work just fine when you get done. |
