Best place to register a domain?
What is the best place to register a domain? Not cheapest, just best.

I have tried a lot of them and you cannot beat the service from Network Solutions.

I went through www.register.com , never had a problem with them. I think pricing will all be pretty similar for domain registrations.

Actually not all domain regs are priced the same, some offer a cheaper initial registration and the some others offer cheaper renewals. I registered mine from qwho.com/namesecure.com for $35/2yrs; renewal is cheaper as well. The ones I registered from enameco.com were $16/yr for reg and renewal.
There is nothing special that Network Solutions has, and it is my personal opinion that NS folks are crooks, but thats a different story. As long as you can find someplace with 24/7 tech and a web based control panel go for the lowest one. |

My experience with Network Solutions has left me with a less than stellar opinion of them, interesting to see I'm not alone. I will check out the others, thanks all!

alright, alright.....I admit the first time I registered a Domain with NS I had some trouble figuring out their procedures for making changes to the registration. It can be kind of complicated. Now that I have figured out what they need to make a change I do not have any problems at all. I am sure there are other reputable places to register domains that do a great job. I have used a few of them and had very little trouble. I can tell you this. Do not use ALLDNS.com if you are in a hurry. They are cheap but they do things at a Turtles pace if at all.

Sometimes the easiest way to register a domain is to let your prospective host do it through their preferred vendor. Just insist that YOU be the registrant, admin, and billing contact - not them. Your host should be the technical contact only. You may pay a bit more for the original registration this way, but YOU will be getting the renewal bill if you are the contact. Let the host do the legwork and earn their setup fee.

Try Dotster. They seem to run pretty fast and only charge about
glc is correct to be careful how you register a domain. Getting stuff like admin contact changed is more difficult than transferring the domain. |

Don't go with Network Solution or Register.com. They're just rip offs.
I highly recommand www.000domains.com $13.50 per year. Not only are they twice as cheap for the same domain name, they have excellent support. They answer your emails within a few hours, and chaging DNS, etc is a piece of cake, you will not be disappointed. |

The reason for this question originally was mainly for my wife's boss, he's gotten a domain renewal notice from NetWork Solutions. In dealing with NetWork Solutions over the last few months for other clients I have had nothing but trouble and very slow response. This is not all entirely due to NetWork Solutions though, my boss did not have the foresight years ago in setting up these domains. All of them were set-up using a contact via e-mail, trouble is, this was often a secretary or office person who is no longer with the company. When requesting a domain transfer, NetWork Solutions attempts to verify that this is a valid transfer by sending a verification e-mail to the contact person. I have seen situations where the contact person is no longer employed and may have used a third party ISP or e-mail. Since no-one is around or able to respond to the verification e-mail Network Solutions will not initiate the transfer. Once you slip off of their "normal" tracks in this case, you are in for a long ride home. It has taken us on occaision, numerous phone calls, e-mails, faxes, etc.....to finally accomplish a transfer, often weeks later. For all I know this may be the case with all these companies. It does seem that the easiest way to ensure smooth future transfers would be to go the password method rather than the e-mail contact method. If the password is know to several key personnel, be they owners or IT people, it would seem much easier in the future to get this handled with the minimum of hassle. And my boss, after all this, set up the newly transfered accounts using............e-mail conformation.

Good Doman Registrars
Just so happens my domain names are up for renewal and after reading thru this thread, I found GKG referred to by WIZ cost the least and appears to provide comprable services to Homepage which I first registered 10names with which I seem to have pd about $40 too much. Now can I transfer my domain names to a less expensive registrar? How do I do that? Thanks WIZ and it seems anything over$15.is too much frm all the ones I looked at.

nightsky,
Not a problem. If you go to the Domain Registration page and click on transfers (or just click here) it will give you a full explanation on how to transfer, it costs $9.99 but they give you an extra year. Mike |

If you transfer it to 000domains, 000domains will do it for you when your current one is about to expire at no charge at all.

nightsky,
This is copied from thier site: "Transfer includes the addition of one year to the expiration date for a total of $9.99. " I haven't transferred any names to them but from what I can see is if you transfer to them, they tack another year onto the end of your current term and complete the transfer for $9.99 Mike |
