Can't play Flash media with Firefox

Hi All,

Went to a couple of sites today that required Flash to play (a news site and Motorola for two examples). Since I was trying out out Firefox's 1.5 beta, I suspected that was it. So, I downloaded and installed the offical 1.0.7 version but still have the same problem.

Any ideas?? Maybe a setting or the like?

TIA

TR

Flash player is a plug in, is it not??? I have problems too with firefox because when you go to install certain plugins they don't recognize firefox as a browser installed on your PC so they don't install themselves into that browser. I would check moxilla's website under plugins...

I did and tried what they linked to, but it still doesn't work. I check the sites with IE and they are up and working.

Got any other ideas? (I hope )

I ran into the same problem awhile back. I was using FF 1.0.4 and they quickly came out with 1.0.5 and then within a couple weeks 1.0.6. Being slow on updating at that time, I ended up going directly from 1.0.4 to 1.0.6 and that's when I noticed the problem. Certain sites with flash objects embedded would make my computer totally lock up and I'd have to hit the reset key to reboot. The time I noticed it was about the same time I upgraded to the higher version, so I don't know exactly if the 1.0.4 version would still work and the new version is what flash doesn't like, or whether it was just a coincidence with me and all the versions are screwy. I liked the tabbed browsing of FF though, so HAL pointed me to the Maxthon browser and I've been happily using it ever since.

Thanks for the post, ktkendall. I don't really want to give up FF, so on the rare sites it doesn't work right with, I just pop open IE, do my biz, and then duck out of IE. FF is so much faster that I can take a nap waiting for IE...

Hi again juppy. Ya, I know it use to work, but I've done every upgrade and don't know either when it stopped working. I was getting ready to try Maxthon a while back, but tried FF first and love it. Max is suppose to be pretty good from what I hear.

Although I'd like it fixed, it's not that big a deal as I can use IE when necessary, and I rarely need Flash anyway. Since 1.0.7 doesn't do Flash, I'm going to go back to the 1.5 BETA version which is faster than 1.0.7. The main reason for me to go back to 1.5 is that they fixed the mouse wheel problem.

I'll keep looking at both sites for an update.

Thanks

Yeah, I tried FF first as well, and to be quite honest I was pretty hooked on FF. IMO though, Maxthon seems to load and run even faster than FF (at least on my machine anyway). One of the things I like is how much (or little) of your resources it takes up. Their site said that FF takes like 50 meg, IE takes around 30 meg, but Maxthon takes only about 10 meg, so it doesn't hog much memory. Took a little while to get everything set up like I wanted with how the tabs acted and such, but now that I got it close to what FF was, I'm happy. It has one heck of an ad blocker too. The counter shows it's blocked 15,090 ads since I started using it about a month to a month and a half ago. All that plus compatibility with most of the sites that are optimized for IE. You oughtta give it a try some time....you can always go back to FF if you don't like it.

Interesting. I thought that Maxthon was an "extention" for IE..?!? Or am I thinking of something else?

No, I think you're thinking of the right program. It used to be called MyIE2 but they changed the name to Maxthon recently I guess. But yeah, basically it's IE with things like popup/ad blockers, tabbed browsing, and other goodies added in that were found in FF. Best of both worlds IMO.

It seems the "problem" starts with 1.0.7. My "better half's" computer still has 1.0.6 on it and it plays flash games. Not sure if it's a Firefox or Macromedia's problem, though, meaning will Macromedia do an upgrade release?...

Hadn't thought of that.....might be something to do with the version of Flash you're using, because you say your problem starts with FF 1.0.7 but I noticed it on 1.0.6 on my machine. You know how these companies are though.....they'll blame each other until they're blue in the face so I doubt we'll ever find out which one is the real culprit.

When I first tried the 1.5 beta (which I want to put back on), I went to Macromedia's site. I found a page that wanted specific info on which browser you had. They stated that there was no Flash version for that version of FF. For some reason, I can't find that page again...??

Just a couple more clues: My other computer without the problem is running Flash player 7. This box is running version 8. Also, when I turn off the AdBlock plugin, I can get (at least some) Flash animations.

Here's a test link:

http://broadband.motorola.com/consum...lashDetected=1

With AdBlock on, it won't work, with it off, it does...

When I get the time I might try re-installing Flash version 7 to see if that makes a diff.

I have updated from FF 1.0.6. to 1.0.7. twice and on both occasions was unable to browse,so I have had to revert back to version 1.0.6.

Wait wait, did you say with ad block, the site does not load? You may have to look through your ad blocker, and see what kind of sites are blocked.

I have Ad Block, and the site runs fine for me.

Click me

Please check that, it should help you with your flash problems.

Success! Nice find, ztx! - Unchecking the "Obj-Tabs" in Options did the trick!

Thanks.

No such thing as a stupid tip, darkside! That could have easily been the problem. Heck, I can't coun't the times I've "fixed" stuff for folks by simply plugging the dang thing in!

Thanks for the post.
