Is this download speed good?
I'm now hooked up to cable Internet at 4Mbps (got rid of DSL at 1.5). Just did my first major download (a program update). Since I don't really know what to expect for good D/L times, I figure I'd ask
![]() File size was 966MB, and the D/L time was 34 minutes. That works out to about 28.5MB per minute. I'm sure pleased (DSL averaged 3MB/minute) but am just curious if that speed is about where it should be. TIA

Just to keep your mind at rest test your speeds at www.testmy.net. But those are awsome speeds compared to my DSL 3.0Mbps d/l speed.

Wow! I was kinda expecting just the opposite posts! The speed counter started out extremely high, but kept dropping.. and dropping... until it hit just about 1/3 of what it was when it started, and that is one reason I was curious.
Thanks for the posts, Everybody! |

I have 5 Mbps Road Runner at home, but I pay $44.95 a month.
My highest download speed that I have ever seen was about 800 kbps, which = 48 MB per minute. Don't remember what I was getting, only that it was kinda small and insanely fast. The slowest I've seen recently is zero. Not kidding. Zero. Must have been something wrong with the server. It started out at like 10 kbps and got slower then just stopped. My average speed for real downloads that have a significant size is 300 - 500 kbps = 18 - 30 MB per minute. The same your getting, and I know a lot of people that say I have a wicked fast connection, so you're right on track. It all depends on where you're getting the file. It depends on someone elses speed and upload max, if it has to be uploaded. It also depends on the time of day. Cable is a shared bandwidth that has to transfer the data for your television shows as well as your internet. Along with your neighbors television and internet. The more activity on the information highway, the slower the speed. By the way, how much does it cost where you live?

That's 3.8 Mbps equivalent - looks like you are getting rated speed.
