My university recently switched to IMAP and I am wondering how I can get Outlook Express to treat it as a default client, putting deleted messages in the trash and use my Norton Anti-Spam folder when it encounters spam, or am I just screwed and should I switch to another account that allows POP3?

IMAP is a server, there is no difference to the configuration on IMAP than it is for POP3 for OE to become a default mail client. For deleting mails, it marks the mails as deleted till purged, which can be done automatically or manually.

Personally, I cannot stand POP3 servers; they are the low cost, low overhead alternatives to the IMAP servers which have a great feature-set. Probably one of the only requirements I have for choosing hosting companies for my personal domains is that they have IMAP.

that's great that they are marked as deleted, but I'd like them out of my inbox, because they really clutter everything. I don't like to purge them all automatically in case I find out I shouldn't have deleted them. I am also really dejected that my 75 dollar anti-virus software doesn't seem to do jack to protect me from viruses since the switch to IMAP was made. In general I'm just having trouble making the switch, I'm not saying I have a problem with it. I've been told it's better, and more secure, but I haven't yet figured out how to make it work for me.

My main goals are 1) Make any files I erase from the inbox move to the trash folder. 2) Make my anti-virus and anti-spam software interface with the new protocol so I can stop worrying about the 300 spam messages I get every day. 3) Make OE actually download the e-mails, or not download them. I'm not picky. As long as it is consistent, as opposed to right now, because it currently has seemingly no pattern as to what gets downloaded and what I have to do manually.
