IE6 and Firefox Problem

I have just built a new machine using.

Gigabyte GA - 81G1000MK MB
A Pentium 4 CPU 3.06 ghz which is about 2 years out of a DELL Dim 2400
250 gb Hitachi HD as Master
40 gb Maxtor HD (Original HD) as slave
512 mb DDR400 memory

Internet connection via cable to Belkin Wireless Modem/Router

Updated Bios after Installing Win XP to F1

Running Win XP with SP2

The problem is that when I use IE6 or Firefox, after clicking a couple of links the machine does a Hard Reset every time I have tried various other programs that are installed on machine and they run fine, only other problem is that if I try and do a system restore to try and go back the restore will not work.
Tried removing battery and Fail safe Settings restore.
CPU is clocking at correct speed 133 * 23 = 3.06 ghz

There is no Virus on machine, also I have Zone labs Firewall.

Have I got a bad CPU or a bad Win XP Installation or are there any other things I could try.

Regards and thanks for any help
John

So it's only when you use your network that you get a crash? Are you running any other programs in the background that are using the internet .. like MSN messenger or Yahoo or whatever? Do you have any issues with them? If its only when you use the network, then the first thing I would check/swap is your network card... that is assuming that the PC works fine for everything EXCEPT a web browser, or ensure that you have a good set of drivers.

The first thing I would do is turn off automatic reboot on crash and then let it crash note down the exact error and post here. I would also suggest you check your system logs to see if anything got logged.

I definately sounds like a software related possibly a driver problem.. If you right click my computer, then click manage, and check your system event viewer and application events, and hopefully you'll get a clue in there as you may see errors that coincide with the system crashing, although you may not because it is crashing and may not have time to record the event, but at least it is 1 place to look for a clue. Did you install all the motherboard drivers and all correctly updated drivers for nic card and video card?? Check device manager also for any errors there...

The various test I have tried don't seem to give me any results.

So I did a clean install from another version of Win XP with SP2 added and installed fine then when I used the Gigabyte Driver install disk as I was installing Chipset drivers the machine would closedown and restart NOT A RESET and then continue to installl chipset drivers again and after a while it would closedown again, it dfid this about 6 times, the chipset drivers never got to be installed as it started again to install.
I am pretty convinced it may be the CPU that I took out of the old machine that may have a fault.

I am trying one last method that is to install from an original build 2600 Win XP disk then install SP2 and then try the Chipset driver disk again.

Regards John

Is the machine stable till you install the Gigabyte driver CD? I dont see anything on your mobo that would not be recognized by XP SP2. Your CD might actually be old. Have you checked to see if the INF chipset driver on the website is newer than the one you have?

Hi

I think I have found possible problem.

I installed from the Install disk I have which is an early Win XP build 2600 and updated to SP2 then put Gigabyte Driver disk in, every thing installed fine.
So far so good.
Installed Firefox and a few other programs, all went fine IE6 and Firefox seem to work fine opening a number of links and multiple windows in both at the same time.

I then installed Avast Antivirus, worked fine, then Zonelabs Pro think it was version 564, which seem to work fine, then I upgraded Zonelabs to version 60-667-000 and then the resets started again, I shutdown Zonelabs and went back to Win XP Firewall and everything seems to be fine again.

I presume Zonelabs is the problem on this machine but have same version installed on other AMD cpu machines with no problems.

Any ideas.

Regards John

The problem was short lived.

I installed a number of other programs and the reset problem started again, so i am convinced it may the CPU so I will go back to my favourite MB Asrock and AMD cpu replacement.
This will be a cheaper option.
I will report my results.

Regards John
