"favicon.ico" files in temporary internet folder

I am picking up multiple files called "favicon.ico" in my Windows temporary internet folder. I'm curious as to what they are. Do they have any functionality similar to cookies?

No no, not like cookies.

They're icon files, sometimes when you add sites to your IE favorites, you might notice that their icon is different, instead of the default blue e icon.

That's what favicon.ico does, it changes the icon for that site in your favorites, sites put that file in the web root and IE automatically uses it.
