I don't know if anyone here will be able to help me, and I do have to call the Internet provider still, but I figure this is worth a shot (you guys have been huge helps in the past).
I'm a church secretary, and my boss (the rector) has been having trouble with her e-mail for the last few weeks. She uses a desktop at home and a laptop at the office, both with XP Home Edition. We have a wireless network set up at the church (which, IMO, sucks, but it's what we have right now; changing to a proper LAN & intranet with some wireless access when we do renovations this year). Both her home computer and her work computer have Eudora as the e-mail client. Our provider is Telus, the provincial phone company (http://telus.net if you're at all curious). At work, she isn't able to download any messages off the server, and she can't send any e-mail, either. At home, she can download the messages but I think she's still unable to send. She had both locations set to leave messages on the server, but that isn't even working properly. I've changed her account from a pop to an imap, in the hopes that it would help (especially since she's using more than one computer to check her e-mail), but she still can't get or send messages using Eudora. Oh, and she won't use webmail because it apparently won't save messages she sends. (I don't think that's true, but I haven't fully investigated the options with the webmail yet.) Does anyone have any ideas that I could try? If I can't get it working properly, then I'll call the provider this afternoon. We have a "computer guy" in the parish who I am sure would be able to fix it, but he of course costs money (basically, we contract him to do some IT work for us, and he'll set up the LAN and the intranet when the time comes - that's what he does for a living). Thanks! -Janna |

I'd suggest you try a different e-mail client. If you don't want to use a M$ client, I'd suggest Thunderbird or Pegasus.
A thought - what antivirus is she using? Sometimes you have to fiddle with the proxy settings to clear up no send/no receive problems, or disable the realtime email scanner. |

Antivirus is Norton. I disabled Norton while I was running Housecall, but I didn't try to send/receive while it was disabled. I should try that.
I use Thunderbird at home and quite like it, but of course everyone has their personal preferences. I'll give the antivirus thing a shot. Thanks! |

Another thought - is she using the email address provided by telus? Or is it something from another mail provider? If it is by telus, then your best bet is to follow the instructions and check the configuration and settings for Eudora. Eudora is a fine enough client and it should work well, and I dont think you will see a difference in the error even with another email client. Btw .. from what I see on telus' page it is a POP server not an IMAP - http://edtnnt01p.telus.net/SRVS/CGI-...4,Solution=568

It wasn't working as a pop, and so we tried changing to an imap - I have access to the church internet account - since she uses two different computers to check anyhow. It doesn't work either way. Telus gives the address for the imap, but they don't give any other configuration instructions for imap. Trying to change back to pop (in Eudora) says that it's going to delete what's there, and that's not acceptable.
I have yet to try it with Norton disabled, but hopefully I'll be able to do that today. It's weird, because it says there's new mail (which there is) and then it just sits and spins for forever, then it times out without downloading anything. I just checked the options with the webmail, and they seriously have NO SENT FOLDER. You'd have to send yourself a copy in order to keep one, if you were using webmail. My home e-mail is through Shaw (the cable company), and while I prefer Telus' web site management system, Shaw's webmail is much better! The service just ended, so hopefully I'll be able to try disabling Norton soon... |
