connecting to FTP server on different network

Ok to start I found this site on here the say build your own SERVER. i followed it perfect. i have my network up and running. all the computer on my network can access the FTP files. works great.

i turn the laptop on. hook to a wireless (not on my network) using IE or WS_FTP Professional it is not allowing me to connect to the FTPserver

How do i connect to my server if i am out of town or away from my server

Thanks

Is your server behind a firewall? What is your network setup?

If your server is behind a firewall, you are going to have to open it up to the outside world in order for you to access it from outside of your own network.

So you can connect to the server's IP address, but you can't initiate an FTP transfer?

Are you trying to connect to the server by it's IP address, or what?

Are you getting any error messages, like timeouts, access denied, or something similar?

Some ISP's block the ports for FTP and web servers. I had this problem with Adelphia and couldn't get an FTP server to work.

What you need to do is setup the server then have your router forward port 21 to the server. Then to get to the FTP simply use your IP address assigned by your ISP.
