Web design competition - you up for it?
Actually, do you know what, I think a webdesign competition would be a great idea, I work as an IT consultant and I'm just bored of the whole system analysis and implementation crap, true most clients always have bigger ideas than what can be carried out, that's where system's analysis comes into practice, but I want to do something for myself for the fun of it.
Here are some websites I've created for fun; http://www.axp.mdx.ac.uk/~sh564/ - needs Internet Explorer for best view. http://www.coolfox.20m.com - this site took me a really long time to do, it's based on Encryption and also has a tutorial. So who's ready for a competition? KronoLeginaire I challenge you... so here are the rules; 1. Anything goes 2. Must be your own work 3. Graphics must be your own 4. HTML coding, Javascript, Flash, Director, VBS, Java, PHP, ASP - generally all coding must be your own. 5. No illegal content 6. This can act as a resume, so it's a good idea to put all your best points accross. 7. Rules can change, according to what the majority of competitors see fit. 8. You can upload your site for free at http://www.20m.com - no banners. 9. The winner is declared on the PCmech site by having a poll - majority votes wins.. I've got a feeling I'm going to win... |

I would like to see a competition of sites written with XHTML 1.0
If we do that, you can count me in. |

Mosquito, you can do it in XHTML or whatever you want, but it stills boils down to who can come up with a functional cool site

I suggest we select a theme, and then determine a period of time to implement it.

I'm just starting holidays, so you have my attention. I agree with Mosquito that we should have some sort of theme.

Well I think we should make it freestyle, this will give everyone a chance to win... if we based it on say, a techie theme, that might not be some peoples strong point. Anyway, that's my opinion. What time limit should we set?

I've been working w/ DHTML lately. All I can say is...Very Cool. I'd be up for some kind of contest or such. I think it should be freestyle though. That'll allow all different kinds of languages. Also I think there should be a theme. That way everyone is working toward the same objective, but everyone will be using different ways to accomplish it.

First, I have no desire to compete in your challenge. Bu I do have an idea....
Freestyle or thematic...both can be fair, both can be unfair. It's hard to judge freestyle for the same reason it's hard to create based on a theme. Say I were the judge, if I like a cetain style or topic, I'd obviously lean that way. And as ©_1978 said, if you base the competition on a theme, as the designer, you may be at a disadvantage. On to my idea.....my wife is an interior designer (not decorator). When she's bidding on a client, she bases her proposal on certain attributes given to her by the perspective client. I as a audio/video producer do the same thing with the clients I work with. So why not pick 1 person not in any way afiliated with the competition or the entrants to act as your perspective client. You would then build your web page around their needs (this person would need to come up with a real or fictitious company or group that the web page would be for -- I know this is inhearently thematic, but this is how the real world operates). The perspective client would give a list of what they want the web page to show and ideas about the general look and feel of the page. This is how it's done in the real world, so why not do that here? And a note to Dok....this could theoretically become the First Annual PC Mechanic web designers showcase and competition. Broadcast the competition around the web -- open it up to amateur web designers from all over the net. First, prize, recognition and something to put on a resume. -Craig |

Thank you
Thank you, I'm not sure who made the modifications on the running fox, but the encryptions pretty cool eh?
audiyoda, as I explained in the first post, that it was something more of a personal homepage rather than commercial driven. I've been doing systems analysis and implementation for such a long time, I really need a rest from all that... that's why I say freestyle... do anything you like, make it inspirational.... Copyright -- that's fine. I just thought you wanted some validity to the competition. Making it real world does that -- it shows you can work with a client. You did after all say:
