Reformatting PC & losing Internet connection

Can someone help?

I reformatted the family computer today (Desktop HP pavillion a520n), and reinstalled Windows XP Professional. I've done it on my laptop plenty of times, never had a problem. Everything went fine on the PC, but I couldn't regain internet connection after the installation was complete. I know its not my ISP, they confirmed the connection is good. They mentioned that I may have deleted the drivers when reformatting. Not too sure what drivers are or how I replace them?? Also, when I look at my network connections under control panel, I only see a 1384 connection not a local connection. I believe this may have something to do with problem. Not too sure, can someone let me know what I should do. Thank you very much.

You need to (re)install the Network Drivers to your system.

help also needed on a similar issue

Hi,
I was about to start a thread on the same problem but found this one. I tried downloading the drivers suggested, and I installed them, but it makes no difference. When I go to upgrade drivers under my computer - properties it tells me my current driver is up to date.

I have reinstalled the software for my adsl and virgin.net (ISP) but nothing appears under network connections except the 1394 connection.

When I try to create a new connection and I choose to set up connection manually the option for connecting using a password, etc, is greyed out and the only option available is the one which says 'connect using a broadband connection that is always on'.

Another route I tried gave me an error number 711: 'A configuration error on this computer is preventing this connection'.

So, the driver manager recognises the hardware is there and the drivers are installed. And when I open the virgin.net shortcut it opens the connection dialogue box with the virgin.net settings in it - but clicking 'connect' does nothing.

Any ideas?

More info...

Are you trying to connect through local area netowrk? Dial-up?

Have you gone into device manager and checked if all drivers are loaded?

You do mean the Gigabyte motherboard chipset/LAN drivers that came in a CD correct? Not the drivers I suggested above for the HP desktop?

In addition - please start your own thread on the topic.

Dammit - yes, I just realised, they are HP drivers and not what I would need. Oops!

I have now spoken with the guys at Virgin technical support and they are telling me I need to do a complete reinstall of windows XP - which I am reluctant to do because, well, it would be a long job.

Basically, the problem is as stated. I have been installing and uninstalling drivers lately and began to get messages about corrupted .dll files and missing files messages so I did a reboot from my system cd and did a repair from it. When I got back to my desktop my broadband connection was gone so I reinstalled the software. My adsl modem is definitely working ok because I am using it now on my Mac to write to this forum. I have checked my Windows components and the network elements are all there. My computer recognises the modem when it is plugged in and when I go to Device Manager it is there under network devices and drivers are up to date.

BUT - when I run the virgin.net software install no connection is created, even though this is the exact disk I used to do it the first time and it was a smooth and straightforward procedure. If I go to the Networks control panel the only connection available is the 1394 connection. If I click to create a new connection and the new connection wizard opens, I click to connect to the internet - set up connection manually - but the only option I then get is to connect using a broadband connection that is always on: all other options are greyed out!

If I try Dial up preferences I get the error 711.

If you want me to start a new thread I will but I have started a few recently and didn't want to upset the mods.

Thanks for your input.
