Freaky Bandwidth Changes.

I recently changed my internet provider because my bandwidth was slowing down to unacceptable levels but now I suspect it was not my providers fault since I am still getting the same thing.

I have Comcast where I am typically getting around 8000kbps..which is great. Periodically, the bandwidth slows down to 100kbps or somewhere around that speed.

I really don't think it is my provider since the same thing is happening with Comcast as it did with my previous provider. I suspect it is my computer but I cannot confirm it.

I've been experiencing drastic slowdowns, even down to 7K! I complained to my cable company and heard several different stories of "why." They came out several times, at no charge, for testing and the like. We even tried different modems (I own a Surfboard 5120 and they use the older 5100) and new cable ends, etc., but nothing changed. I persisted on calling them everytime it happened. Finally, one day they came out, but I never saw them.... until late in the day. The service guy hung out at the service box and monitored my speed / connection for hours there. Don't know what they found wrong or what they did, but it's been fixed for a couple of weeks now...

Maybe if you start bugging them, your's will get fixed....???

I checked the speed of my wifes computer when my computer slowed down last night. We are on the same router and have the same IP address. Hers stayed at the normal speed.. Weird, it has to be my computer that is doing this...not my broadband connection.

If the comps are using nic, could be faulty? Just taking a random guess here.

Glad you like the site, David M. I'm not a network guy, so I'm pretty clueless. To just throw some things out: have you checked for any NIC updates (software or firmware)? Are you running more than one firewall or antivirus program? Have a dozen spyware programs running and maybe conflicting? Or try swapping cat5 cables with the other computer? Or a screwy NIC like ztx mentions.

Hopefully someone will post with a "more better" post...

i have comcast. last year at this same time they were upgrading and i would get those kinds of speed. so when you call your internet provider do they say anything about they are in the middle of upgradeing?
