new tabs in firefox

i just started using firefox and i noticed that when you type a new url in the address bar, it just changes the page your on. any way to make it so that every link or address or anything will open a new tab? i used to use AM browser and it did this and i like this feature enough that it may sway me from firefox, as the tabbed browsing is the most convenient feature for me.

or a way to close tabs without right clicking? i see these extentions is this where you tweak it??

Ctrl-T opens a new tab, then type the new url. Holding Ctrl while clicking a link opens the link in a new tab. Not sure about closing tabs...

Tabbed browsing extension allows address in the URL to open in new tabs. Also, middle clicking links opens new tabs. Get that extension and play around... lots of very nice features.
