My Internet connexion has been stubbornly sleazy since I fresh installed WinXP Pro SP2. Although being set to check for new mail every 10 minutes Mailwasher sometimes stays there just for an hour or less without doing it. Sometimes, when using the Windows Explorer I get the popup that I am working off-line and if I want to connect (why in hades does Windows Explorer needs the Internet I know not and I also want to find a way to block it from the Internet altogether). When I click on the "check mail" button in Mailwasher it displays the message that it can't because there doesn't seem to be an Internet connexion available. I am forced to "revive" the connexion by just opening a web browser and going to some site, after that Mailwasher checks for mail, but then, if I let it sit for some more time, sometimes it checks again for mail every 10 min as it's instructed to, sometimes it doesn't.
Has anyone had the same problem? Any ideas on how to fix it? This is extremely annoying. TIA for any useful input.

I have had those types of issues in the past. Check things that windows likes to hide... the power down of network devices to save energy can do it.
Why IE is trying to connect may be an auto updater of some sort? IE is hard to control as I'm sure you know. Disabling the right services might control it althought it would be a pain. I would think finding the initiating app would be a beter solution.

Hi, Fudtone and thanks for the quick reply.
Er, it's not IE, but the Windows Explorer, IE isn't having any problems. I had already disabled the power savings on my NIC.

Not sure, but I think I read somewhere that sp2 doesn't work well with XP pro. sp2 for for XP Home is a good choice. Pretty sure I've heard only use sp1 with XP pro.

rwest, SP2 works just about the same for XP home and Pro, almost no differences. SP2 might cause problems for some older software, but those problems will be the same for all XP versions. I don't know where you heard that, but it's not true. As for the original problem, Nuclear Krusader, do you get any connection dialog boxes ?

Such as?
Only one I sometimes get is that which I above described, whilst working with the Windows Explorer. I tried disabling the firewall (Kerio) and the problem persists without it, so it's not the culprit. |
