Ftp Wth?

Hello, I am trying to get onto red hats ftp via command prompt.

FTP.redhat.com

I log in ok, but when I try to get a list I get the following:

access denied
USE PORT OR PASV

I dont know what that means. I am assuming "PORT" is not the same context as the ftp ports 20 or21 since I am already connected.

anyone else know what gives? Im new to this and just getting some excersise from text book.

thanks for your help

steve

Sounds like the Server wants you to use PASV mode... Unfortunately, from what i've been reading, the Windows FTP.EXE doesn't support that mode

Thank you for the reply, What is "PASV mode"?

Would the only way to access this then be with either a unix or linux based os? I will try to dig a little deeper.

Thanks for any info

Steve

How to configure I.E. to use PORT or Passive mode w/2000/XP

I found this for anyone else who may be interested.
This is just for I.E. however I am trying to use the command -prompt.

You are going to have to use a FTP client - if you are behind a router, you have to use PORT or PASV, neither of which the command line Windows FTP is capable of.

Thread currently going on good free clients:
