IE6 spontaneously selects "automatically detect settings"

I have IE6 sp2 and although I use firefox and could care less if IE worked, when this problem occurs, which is always, it disables the Windows Media Player plug-in in firefox and I can't watch the funny videos I love so much. Anyways, the problem is that IE6 automatically selects "automatically detect settings." As I have the nice, easy to use, basic set-up, this box being checked makes IE6 not work. I must go in and uncheck the box any time I want to use IE or WMP. And to make it more annoying, sometimes it just randomly re-selects the box during use and I must once again go back in and deselect it. Pretty damn annoying. I have visited Microsoft.com and unfortunately do not speak their language. Any help would be appreciated.
