Hyperlinks don't work

Hi,
I was working on someone's PC and I noticed whenever I clicked on a hyperlink to go somewhere on the internet it wouldn't work. What would cause this? Is there some setting somewhere that is wrong? She was using Time Warner AOL Broadband.
TIA

What URL shows up on the address bar after clicking on a hyperlink? Is it the same URL that the link is pointed to? What do you mean by "it wouldn't work"?

Well one example is when I opened the Security ballon because she didn't have virus software, and it has how to get virus software, the how is a hyperlink that takes you to various companies that offer virus software for XP but it wouldn't go there. If there is a hyperlink in the email to go to a web site it won't go there. On example of that Time Warner sends you a email to get free virus software from Computer Associates it has a hyperlink in to go to their website it won't go there when you click on it.

Odds are that it's some piece of spyware that has changed this so any link has to go through it in order to collect data on your surf habits.

Will your internet work if you just simply type in the URL to the address bar? If so, run HouseCall, install an AntiVirus software, run Adaware SE, run Spybot S&D, and run Windows Defender. Reboot, and try using a link again.

Thanks Mesaeus and kram, yes I can type in the url's I did run Adaware and Spybot found over 400 pieces of spyware, but I've had trouble getting an antivirus on there, I'll try running Housecall. What is with Housecall now they want you to install Java? Oh by the way when I click on hyperlink IE or AOL doesn't even open so of course there is no url in the address bar.

Housecall is TrendMicro's online version of their PC-Cillin/OfficeScan NT product. For a product they offer for free, it's very nice. Housecall may ask that you install Java as a base for running the program. Of course, this is a temporary solution - you will need to install a residential antivirus software as soon as possible in order to prevent these viri/adware/spyware from entering into your system.

Thanks kram, I can't believe she didn't have virus software. She thought AOL did that for her, they did have something but wasn't very effective and their spyware program let on over 400 pieces of spyware. So their security suite isn't very secure. I did run Stinger it didn't find anything, I do know it only detects certain things so I do need to run Housecall.

If it's that chewed up I'd also run Ewido.
