Gets to 99% and gives me the following error; set up failed to configure the server, ref 2 the server error logs & set up error logs for more info, error 1603. I hav efollowed Act support directions to try and correct this but the program still will not load. after checking the error logs they only say programs failed to complte installation. You're not running a server, I'm guessing you have XP pro but I would like not to guess so please post back your specs, but ACt is convinced you're installing it on a server.
Both the XP operating systems and 2K can be configured to act as servers, or at least enough like one to allow ACt to install and do it's job, and that's what I think you may have skipped doing before the install.
I would scrub the install and start from scratch.
I would use this : http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
and then I would run a registry cleaner : http://www.ccleaner.com/
and run the disk cleaner utility to make sure I'd gotten everything.
Then I'd go over the install instructions and call support again to make sure my non-server operating system had all the correct settings.
Then I'd try the install again.

You're going to be treating XP pro as your server?

Your basic problem is that software was intended for servers .
It feeds information to other PCs on a network.
You must now, configure XP Pro as a server before you install it.
Instructions are here : http://www.zdnetasia.com/insight/net...0223c-1,00.htm

All of this begs the question though : Why are you trying to install server software on a stand alone pc?
I have the impression that you bought enterprise level software without thinking it through.

Which EXACT version of Act 2006 are you trying to install? There are 4 versions that I can see:

Act 2006
Act Premium for Workgroups 2006
Act Premium for Web 2006
Act Premium for Real Estate 2006

Only the first and last ones are intended for standalone installations.

There is an ACt Professional for 1 user but I don't think that's the one JeiJay bought.
As far as I can tell this version is a software database program that would link an office or work group : http://www.nothingbutsoftware.com/ca...ductCode/33899

Your link is what Act calls "Act 2006". Act is a network *capable* contact manager. I've been using it for years as a standalone.

www.act.com

The latest version is a big hog - and I believe it depends on MS SQL to work.

Yes it does use MS SQL and is used for small groups (Till the office IT guy throws a fit) and it's got more problems than 'bloat' though :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/cus...966&s=software

I haven't been able to get anything other than 404 errors from the forum at Sage for several days now but the above is a sample of what buyers think of the program and I'd bet the forum shows the same.

edit : If I had to guess I'd say the "expanded features" just plain don't work.

It is ACT 2006 v8, It I son a stand alone PC that is used primarily to keep a data base of contacts used for Real Estate work. It is backed up on a regular schedule. It was installed and not working so I uninstalled it and tried to re-install it. Now one of the back-ups that was working but is saved online is no longer working since I uninstalled ACT. This problem is just bothering me. Thanks for all the help so far.

What you have access to as a registered user of ACT, or your company does, is the
on line support site forum and knowledge base here : http://webx.act.com/

You can post your problem and get replies from the users or conduct your own search.
CNET found that ACT would not install properly on their computer unless Microsoft Office Small Business Management 2006 was uninstalled first and that's where they got the answer.

http://reviews.cnet.com/ACT_2006_8_0...2.html?tag=nav

For grim amusement you can read the User Opinions on the rating the software received on CNET.

It's really a shame - I'm using Act 2000 and it's a superb product. The new versions are just a mess.

This was suppossed to be a simple change to consolidate 3 data bases into one. i will give this one more shot in the am, I have had tech support online a few times and have followed over 10 of their trouble shooting guides they have given to correct the problem and they have not worked. Now my online back up is not working since I unistalled and tried to reistall act. Any ideas about that one?

thanks for the help so far guys

You have an earlier version of ACT?
Is it the one you used to create the back-up?

it was installed (downloaded from online trial) and then the purchase produce key was added. It never worked would not allow database creation. I have act 2000, rea8 and outlook on the same PC all to have access to contact info for use with work. I have used the online support many times with no success.

I was thinking the forum would be your best shot but if that's a wash then ACT 2000 is your only way to the back up.
You may get it in pieces but if you get 'all' the pieces you'll be able to reconstruct it.
