e-mail notification
Hi Gang
Does any one know of a good e-mail notification with sounds, that works with Yahoo mail.? I am tired of having to activate Yahoo messanger, in order to get a audible notification of receiving e-mails. Just needs to be a simple one, Free/or small cost for one. Yahoo messanger does not work half the time, and have no use for it except for the sound it gives with receiving e-mail. I don't use the messanger service. Thanks..........Gunny |

E-mail
Hi GLC
Boy nothing gets by you does it.? I thought I could sneak in on the forum here, and not be noticed, but you caught me. I down loaded the site you gave me for the e-mail notification, seemed simple enough but I cannot get it to work. I keep getting this " Host resolving error ". I believe it is some thing I am not putting in right in the accounts place. I have tried all sorts of different combinations. SBC yahoo, and you name it. Nothing seems to work, do you have any ideas.? It gives as the default port setting as 110, that might not be right either. Well hate to pester you with such dribble, but if you have any ideas I would appreciate you passing them on to me. Thanks and take care............Gunny |

Use the same POP3 (incoming) server that your provider tells you to use if you set up Outlook Express for your email account. SBC Yahoo DSL (now AT&T) here uses pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, your region may be different. The login is your full e-mail address (not just username) and your password. Port 110 is correct.

e-mail
Hi GLC
I am sorry but I changed a few things, like you said but I am still getting the same error. " Host resolving error ". I have my password and address ok, but I still think it has to do with what I am putting under Name and server. I have tried my address, my yahoo mail, etc. and under server I have put what you said pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com, and the same with .net, no changes. I just know there is some thing really simple that I am putting in wrong, I never have gotten the yellow envelope, it stays white. Thanks and take care...........Gunny |

e-mail notice
Hi Gang
You know just about the time you think to yourself, after you have done a few things, build your own computer, installs, added software, etc. And they turn out alright, you think I have this computer thing in hand, and then some thing like this not getting a simple e-mail notification thing working right. And it all comes crashing down on you. You failed, you dummy, you don't know nothing. I know a person can't know everything, other wise there would not be a need for PCmech, now would there. But a simple thing like this, makes you wonder........ All I need is for some one to say hey I have had that same problem, that will give me the courage to continue. ha ha ha ha Thanks and take care.........Gunny |

If pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com does not work, then you need to contact support and find out what your POP server address is. It may be an old Pacbell server or something.
EDIT: If you are trying to use it to check an email address @yahoo.com, your Yahoo mail account must be POP-enabled. I was assuming you are trying to check your SBC mail! I've been using this utility to check my Earthlink mail for years now - which is a standard POP account. Free Yahoo accounts are Web-only and this utility does not work with those, it can only check POP servers, not HTTP servers. Last edited by glc; 05-21-2006 at 11:30 AM. |

Hi GLC
I started a new one because there was not action on my original one, and I posted twice to it, still no replies. There was no interest or some thing. So I thought I would shake the bushes some where else. Gunny |

Ypops does not solve the notification issue though - I don't think he wants to use an email client, he just wants to know when new mail arrives.

e-mail notice
Hi GLC and 51
Well you are both right, I do want the e-mail notification thing, but if it means getting a new e-mail provider, I am game for that too. I am tired of the poor e-mail program that Yahoo has, so maybe it is time or a change. Any suggestions.?`GLC I thought that one you gave to me was a mail provider.????? I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks and take care............Gunny |

Please answer this - what is your email address - xxxxxx@yahoo.com, xxxxxx@sbcglobal.net, xxxxx@pacbell.net - ?
If it's xxxxxx@yahoo.com, just switch to the e-mail address provided by your SBC DSL account. This will still be provided by Yahoo, you can still check it with your web browser (or use Outlook Express), but the notifier will work when set up for it. |

If that is your address, the notifier should work.
Server name: pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com Login: xxxxxx@sbcglobal.net Password: your password Now - I found something that may be applicable - you have to enable POP access to your account. This is copied and pasted from the SBC help pages: There are a number of factors that could cause difficulties with POP access. We've outlined most of them below: Correct Password? Are you sure that the password you're using to access your SBC Yahoo! Mail is correct? Visit the My Account help page to be sure. If you're able to log in to your SBC Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet account with the password you have been using, then your password hasn't changed. If you can't log in, you can request a new password by visiting the My Account online help page. POP Access Option Have you selected the option for POP access on the Mail Delivery Status page? To find out if you have, click "Mail Options" in the upper-right part of the page in SBC Yahoo! Mail, then click the "POP Access & Forwarding" link. Make sure to click "Submit" when you're done. Note: You won't receive POP access if you've selected the "Forwarding" option. These are separate features that can't be used at the same time. Client Settings Is there a problem with your email client settings? Be sure you've configured your email client with these settings: Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com (Port 110) Outgoing (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com (Port 25) Account Name/Login Name: your full email address Email Address: your full email address |
