How It Works: Satellite Internet Access

"Satellite Internet access gives you fast downloads from anywhere, and it's about to get much faster."

Go to PcWorld and search in the review section for Satellite Internet for much more.

Send a message via ICQ to HackinCowboy
Direct PC is way to expensive. I would just wait until you can get cable or DSL. It's not worth it. It's only 400k also. Which is faster than 56k but not that fast.

Cowboy, $$ may not be an object and he may live where other options won't be available for eons. 400k ain't bad if he wants to cook on another stove. Gaming stinks on it and uploads are analog, but...

Agreed on the fact that gaming stinks - the best pings you will ever see are about 500 - if you are lucky. Its a LONG way up to that satellite and back down - twice.

The 2 way satellite svc is provided by Starband and DirectPC. Starband here is sold through Radio Shack; I'm not sure how Starband is doing and how the prices are. As far as the prices go, they're high, but if you live in BFE this may be your only broadband option.

DirectPC 2-way: $70 a month

http://www.directpc.com/#Monthly Charges

Same for Starband:

You can buy Starband directly from the company. Radio Shack makes you buy a PC with the stuff (ick!! a Compaq most likely).

Starband is also available through Dish Network, but the only adapter available last time I looked is USB, which makes sharing using a router almost impossible.

Isn't Cable available in your area? It's about the most reliable and fastest for the price.
About the only thing that will interupt a sat. transmission is heavy rain or snow. Also if you live in an area that has a lot of high winds this will also degrade service due to the dish moving.

Also, every few years (I think seven years) the sun goes through a period of high sunspot/solar storm activity. This will cause temporary interruptions in service .

hey, I talked with Infodish.com today about it. The direcPC is a one way, you have to have a dial up also. The Pegasus Express, is the broadband that is always-on, no dial up telephone service required. is is $699.98 installed, with them installing (required not an option). It is then $69.95 a month. We are considering moving into the country. Dial up is around 26K on a good day. I am currently using DSL and I would probably explode at 26K! Not even a remote possibility of cable in that area.
