If I am correct you can do that by going directly to www.hotmail.com and logging in to hotmail, this allows you to access your email account without starting up hotmail instant messaging.
Do you have messenger running all the time on your machine?
Is messenger set to start when windows starts?

I would think you would need to have AIM running, and set AIM to be your default e-mail client in Internet Options, Programs. This may only work properly with Triton, if at all. I do not believe you can set any pure web-based e-mail to act as default in this manner.

This probably does not apply to AIM, but AOL mail can now be used with standard e-mail clients such as Outlook Express that are IMAP-compliant. It's about time.

Nope. Default mailer can only be Hotmail or standard POP3 if that's all that's showing in the pick list. AIM mail is not standard POP3. Free Yahoo is not POP3. It would probably have to be your ISP's e-mail, set up in either Outlook or Outlook Express.
