how to access internet w/o isp

I'm sure this is a stupid question to some, but humor me. How can I go about accessing the net without using a isp? I've even had the thought of starting up my own isp, any ideas anyone or has anyone tried this?

For what it would cost you to access the net without a traditional ISP, you might as well pay an ISP and let them deal with the logistics. You will have to pay *someone* up the line no matter what - bandwidth is not free and all ISP's pay for it one way or another.

thanks glc! but who do you actually pay for the bandwidth? there must be someway to do this, look at all the free isp's. i know they are selling ad space, but is that all they are doing?

All ISP's pay to connect to the backbone - unless they are also a backbone provider, and if they are, they have a huge investment in equipment and fiber and copper. The free ISP's pay someone to connect, you can bet on that.

Dear God, I've got 8 or 9 textbooks on the subject. There are 4 classes taught here at MSU just on basic internet technologies. The subject is so vast, you've got a lot of read ahead of you.....

Hey audiyoda

I love bks like 'internet for dummies' and the first edition of this series gave a brief history on the evolution of the internet and how the internet and the web are not the same. The web is the automated multi-media commercial version of the internet. The internet requires the use of more technical communication programs using ftp, irc, telenet, unix and alike. It is my understanding that the whole idea of populaizing the internet was motivated by the idea of expanding community using a truly free communication forum. I personally love the idea of a universal commuity unhampered by social and cultural bias ie. a real chat w/someone I wld otherwise never have any interaction with. Chatrooms cld be such rich environments - its sad to see it go the way of decadent ignorance. If freedom really means anything of value to folks then just maybe no one will control cyberspace.
