Hi
I am doing some tests at the moment surrounding getting a Home FTP server running, I am running Windows XP Home SP2. I currently have a Dynamic IP address so headed over to DynDNS to get a dynamic address, which completed fine. I set up my router to port forward (21) to my comp. I have a Netgear DG834G Firewall Router with built in modem. I have tried using serv-u, ipswitch WS_FTP Server demo and Easy FTP Lite to set up my FTP server and it refuses to connect, i can type in the address without "ftp://" at the front and it will go straight to my log in for my router so the address is working so it must be the port forwarding. I have selected a ip address on my internal network rather that it automaticly getting an ip from the router and still it doesn't work. I will aventually have a computer built with all the spare parts i have, running on Windows XP Pro SP2, which i know has built in FTP capabilites. All that will run on this comp will be the ftp server. Will this make a difference when i do this?? Any Help you can give me will be great Wiggo |

Try forwarding port 20 as well. FTP uses a control connection (21) and a data connection (20).
Also, make an exception in windows firewall, if you have not done so already. Last edited by DynamicTech; 07-30-2006 at 08:08 PM. |

Can you connect to the server from inside of your network?
Does your router's firewall rule allow FTP traffic from the WAN? It appears that your router blocks all traffic from the WAN by default. You will need to allow FTP access on inbound traffic to your FTP server. Are you sure you are allowing WAN users access to this service (try allowing all traffic)? Are you sure the correct LAN address and protocol are saved? |

Which FTP server are you using?
Are your NTFS (assuming you are using the NTFS file system) permissions allowing the folder to be shared? Are you attempting to access this folder with an account that has already been authenticated? Are you attempting to access the folder with an account that does not exist on your FTP server? Click the firewall rules link. On that config screen is your rule lists. Under inbound is the rule enabled with the correct ip? |

I am using Serv-U to host my FTP server and I am not quite sure about the permisson for the folder to be shared....could you perhaps explain this a little more and I am using the NTFS file system. The account i am using exists and everything appears to be set up fine.
I have checked the inbound rule and it is correct...the IP it is suposed to forward to is the ip of my computer which i checked on my computer network card properties. Is there anything i need to do in the WAN boxes in the rule???....see screenshot in previous post Thanks DynamicTech for your continued help!!! |

To enable the advanced sharing options, open My Computer, click Tools >> Folder Options.
Navigate to the View tab and scroll to the bottom. Uncheck use simple file sharing. Navigate to your FTP folder and right click >> Properties. Open the security tab to view the NTFS permissions that are in effect on the folder and make sure your account has at least list and read & execute permission. You could open it up for testing purposes then ratchet the sec back down after you get it working. As far the WAN boxes go, try setting the ip values to 0.0.0.0 |
