no pages display

I have run into a problem recently with a couple of computers. they connect fine to the internet, but will not recieve anything.... no pages will load. Could this be caused by a virus and if so has anyone heard of it? Any info would be greatly appreciated. by the way one is running 98se and the other is using ME have tried ie5 ie5.5 and netscape no luck...

Do you the pages seem to just time out or do they just come up right away with that message? Are you on a dial up modem or broadband? If you're on dial up try changing the incoming rate to a higher number. If you go into device manager>Modem>Properties>Advanced you should see where you can change it.

I am on dial-up, and they come up unavailable immediately. I have already tried changing the incoming rate, with no success... I am thinking that it is either a network settings problem. The computer is starting to have more problems ie registry errors so i think i am going to try and format and reinstall... i cant afford to spend alot of time on this one...lol
thanks for the reply!

Cool

Have you installed any filtering or security software lately. I had a similar problem couple of weeks ago using Zone Alarm when the "Code Red" was rampant. I was getting lots of port 80 hits prior to problem. I uninstalled Zone Alarm and problem went away. Downloaded and reinstalled Zone Alarm and still running fine.

Had same problem

Hosie,
Check your winsock.dll to see if u find it. If its still there u can reinstall it to make sure it is not corrupt. Samething w/ your dialup connectors - delete them reboot and set them up again b/c they may be corrupt. At least that was why I cld not get the brower to display any sites although I seemed to connect w/o any problems. I also tried installing 5.5 and that just made things worse. Now I have had to unistall 5.5- don't really want it anyway just was trying to get the browser to work.
