I am transferring my data to a new hard drive since my old one is acting up. But I would like to save the folders and contents in outlook express from the old hard drive to the new. Does anyone know what files need to be copied from the old drive to the new for that purpose. And where these files are in win xp pro.

Search your hard drive for *.dbx - and you have to enable display of hidden and system files to find them. There's a .dbx file for each folder (inbox.dbx, sent items.dbx, etc.), and there is a complete set for each identity within each user account. Default location is c:\documents and settings\username\local settings\application data\identities\(a bunch of hexadecimal)\microsoft\outlook express.
Search the hard drive for *.wab - those are your address books. Default is c:\documents and settings\username\application data\microsoft\address book. Export each mail account to an .iaf file. Tools, accounts, mail, highlight each one, export. Now - save all this mess onto some kind of media. After installing the new drive, copy it all to a temporary folder, if you used a CD-R to save it, remove the read-only attributes. Use the import wizards to get everything - account settings, address book, mail folders. When importing the mail folders, tell the wizard to import from a store directory. |
