no socket error 11004

Ever since I installed Zone Alarm Free version - I'll get no socket error 11004 when trying to get my email and page not displayed when getting t the internet. I reboot and everything is normal. My computer is hooked up to a switch and it's the only computer in the room having the problem.
windows xp sp2. It was hooked up to a router and the same problem. Fairly new computer. What happens is you reboot, everything is fine for awhile - than after the comptuer sits for a while, eventually it will lose connection because maybe a couple of hours later I"ll go into the computer room and I can't get on the internet or check email unless I reboot. Any ideas? I'm almost 99% positive its zone alarm? The last 2 programs I installed was AVG virus and Zone alarm. This was NOT happening before the installation of these programs. I also run Microsoft Defender.

When you installed AVG and told it to scan your outgoing email it sets up a proxy pop server so that instead of going directly to your pop-server, it goes first to AVG for scanning and then to your pop server. You either need to turn off outgoing mail scans or allow AVG to run.

where is that setting.

When you say turn off outgoing mail scans? Is that a setting in OE or AVG? I just want to clear that up.

I also saw some information about losing internet connectivity after awhile in the zone alarm forums - I'll have to poke around a little.

Oe

In the properties of the account - in the servers tab within OE your not talking about the outgoing mail server where I have smtp.comcast.net for the incoming mail server. Take that out?

I'm looking all over the place for an option like this in OE but it isn't clear.

If you are behind a router, I'd uninstall ZA and just use the builtin XP SP2 firewall.

No, there are no settings you need to mess with in OE. Mairving was referring to the AVG e-mail scanner settings - most of the time it works fine with defaults (it will auto configure) but I've seen issues from time to time.

A 11004 error is usually DNS-related. This does point to a possible proxy issue, which may be a problem with the AVG e-mail scanner.

Try opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig/flushdns.

The difference is that the XP firewall blocks incoming stuff only whereas ZA blocks outgoing requests as well as incoming. It won't prevent you from getting spyware but can keep trojans from doing their stuff. AVG doesn't do much with spyware. You will need a separate program for that. Most of the time spyware comes from visiting sites that you shouldn't be going to anyway.
