Setting up a DNS server (behind a router)??
That I've seen, there are no instructions on how to do this (mostly because most people---I presumptuously imagine, anyway---would already know how to do this if they've come this far), so I shall ask here...
I've posted before, but I believe the post has since been removed due to its age, so I'll provide a bit of background info.. I run my own webserver to host my website, located at http://24.17.241.248/, setup behind a LinkSys 4-port Router/Switch. I recently regsitered the domain www.6thworld.com, pointed to that address. However, there's an annoying (and disruptive) tiny frame on the very top of the page. Although it's barely noticable, it almost completely disrupts how my frames works (I know, I know, let's not get into a discussion of frames...). As well, when someone clicks on a nested link, it still only says www.6thworld.com.... I contacted my registrar, and they informed me that if I were to open up an account with a web host, I could grab their primary and secondary DNS server addresses, and then input those into a certain webform the registrar provides, the problem would be corrected. So I thought, "Why couldn't I simply run a DNS server myself? I'm already running a webserver..." I looked into it a little bit, but didn't really find exactly what I was looking for. My questions are: Does anyone know of a Shareware, or preferably Freeware, DNS server I could run that is easily configurable and reliable? How would someone set that up behind a Router? |

What OS do you run? use a machine with a robust OS, like a NIX and then run a DNS server off it. Ok, you need to map port 53 to the IP of the machine running your DNS service on your router. Thats the way to get a DNS server running behind your router.
While all theorotical, you have to be aware of the following caveat, your ISP might be blocking traffic or monitoring traffic preventing you from running a server. THere are plenty of registrars that will do a forwarding to your page, so that you dont need to think of a DNS service on your machines, just a webserver. |

I run 98SE. I'm not even going to bother trying with Unix/Linux, so don't concern yourself with convincing me.. ;> But seriously, I do have a friend who has actually run a web server, e-mail server, and FTP server all behind the same Cable provider I have and he's never been called by it... and he's been running them alot longer than I have. My site is lucky to get 20 hits a day, if that... It's incredibly low traffic, and what with he Code Red worm bombarding things on port 80 lately, I would guess they might even be less concerned with things of that nature, but who knows. Anyway, I'm looking for a server program I can run (that's free), because I've already paid the money (twice, there was a screw-up with my original one, so I left them) for having a registrar server, and I'm not doing it again. And to the new webmaster, such as myself, if they say "web forwarding", well, you figure you won't have to screw around with it after finally finding one that does it for a good price. So yes, any suggestions as to a Win9x compatible DNS server software?

LOL Don't get me wrong, I completely understand.... ;> I won't bother to say Linux isn't better for running things like that, because that just plain isn't true---it clearly is. I just don't feel like manually configuring everything just to run a DNS server, on a computer which doesn't see alot of actual human usage anyway... However, I was considering another option... I do have Windows XP RC2 available to me... I know it's nothing special compared to what the official release will be, but at least it's something... I just haven't decided if I want to run it or 98SE... The "Netbox" is now primary used as a server box, but aside from that, when a live person actually is using it, it's used as a gamebox, and I want to be sure I can run all the games on it that 98SE can... So we'll see what happens. Thanks for the suggested websites!

No idea about XP, but an NT based Windoze is much better for your needs. A lot more stable than 98.
