Problem with internet explorer?

Hey everyone. I got a question. I dont know if this is something that happens often or not. But a friend of mine has a computer with a comcast internet connection. He called me up and told me he turned on his computer and all of a sudden, when he tries to click on his internet explorer icon the window opens up and then immediately closes. It happens everytime, even after restart.
I think I remember that happening to one of my computers a while ago, but I had two browsers at the time. So i just went into netscape, and downloaded and re-installed IE and I think it worked fine. I'm not sure though. So does anyone know what he can do to fix it? IE, of course is the only browser he has, so he can't go on the inernet right now. No other windows have a problem opening and closing like that. Thanks for the replies, let me know if you have any questions.

Do a system restore back to a date when it was working okay.

Or if you want to get them another browser, just download it to another computer and then burn a CD or put it on a USB drive.
