Hi all,
Say I got webcams for all 3 comps on my network and assigned each a static ip...such as 192.168.0.X. Could I use netmeeting then and just "dial up" the computers on my own network and do videoconferencing over my own internal network? Would this work? TIA. |

Hey Flop.
yes it will work. Something I want to point out to others looking at this post. I have set up a "special" netmeeting config for my work, they use it in training rooms, anyway, we use win2k, it is documented that no other version of netmeeting will work with win2k, except the version that comes with it, so the sdk will NOT work, don't even try. Also, sems netmeeting running on a pc (that others are connecting to) is limited to 16 connections, also documented by m$, but they give NO workaround for win2k, only other win95, 98, NT Although more than 16 can connect, IF you wait about 30 minutes I have gotten over 30 connected to one pc. Not recommended... Just an FYI, so others don't bang their head against a wall.

Thanks guys. Now on to step 2. Who makes a good and affordable webcam? I already got one (earthlink one that I got off someone on the forums here a while back, that works ok). What should I be looking at? Logitech? Intel? Thanks again.

I have a Logitech express .. well had .. it plain sux! The software is passable at best ... the resolution pathetic!! The software isnt buggy but features are so sparse especially for anything advanced. Forget video conferencing it isnt good to even make a small avi. The other thing I hated about it is that it really really installs a lot of crap.
I am currently using the Creative Webcam pro and I'd highly recommend it. The difference in plain resolution is like something that was unbelievable. The software is fairly comprehensive, installs well on a Win2k and is not intrusive at all. The other thing I really liked abt the creative was that you can actually select the codec and the input sources for recording. I have made AVIs with MPEG4 and Angelpotion with unbelievable pic quality and really small size. Something logitech cant. The prices esp in CDN were very close .. ~$50 for the logitech for the OEM, and ~$70 for the creative retail.. shrug. |

hi Floppyman and Statica, don't mind I drop in. But I have never use netmeeting before, but is interested to know how to set up a video conferencing on a LAN too. I've a NT 4 server, SP6, and has a ISDN line, and have Win 9x machines as clients. DHCP of course. So how do you go about it ?

Simply use netmeeting to dial an IP as you would regularly.

Is the logitech one truly complete crap? i just bought it, but i havent used it yet. I really want something as cheap as possible, because im just buying it for screwing around with, im not expecting to make high quality movies. Just to take quick pictures and stuff. I got the full retail for $40, and ive seen the creative Plus for $72. I dont really want to spend that much, just something to play with. Is the creative that much better?
sorry that its kinda the wrong thread, but i saw it mentioned here, so i just wanted to ask quickly, thanks

Charliey:
I think so, I'd been using the Logitech for close to a year, and then decided to spring for that extra $30 when getting a new one .. worth every penny. Bought it from College St
