Firefox stops being able to connect to Internet

Hi, I've recently put together a new computer. It's running Windows XP Professional. I'm facing a weird problem: when I leave my computer on and unattended for a long time, the screen saver, obviously, kicks in. When I return to the computer, and that I try to connect to the internet using Firefox, the browser fails to connect, although Internet Explorer generally, but not always, succeeds*. I've tried tinkering with Firefox settings, to no avail. I don't understand why this problem happens. It can generally be solved by rebooting the computer - which makes it all the more weird and frustrating. The network adapter is integrated in the motherboard, which is an Intel D945GTP. Any ideas as to what the problem is?

Thanks!

Check the power management settings on the network adapter in device manager. You do not want it turning off.

Thanks GLC. Unfortunately, even after unchecking the setting "allow windows wo turn this device off to save power", I still have the same problem. I still have to reboot to get firefox to connect. IE does connect, but with some difficulty sometimes.

Thanks for the help,

pstj

do you have the latest network card driver installed from the manufacturer? i would download and install the latest one if you dont have the most current driver and see if that fixes your problem.

How are your main power options set (monitor, hard drives, standby)?
