how to buy owned urls

I have several urls that I have searched on the register site, and while they are currently owned by someone, the sites they direct to are usually generic sites with web search capabilities or advertising. What's the deal with purchasing the rights to urls from these sites? Are they just squatters who scooped up a large amount of domains, waiting to turn a profit? Are we talking arm and a leg? Anything to be cautious of?

Thanks

Patrick

It depends on the url and how much other people want it. Some people aren't squatting. They just haven't developed it yet.

Many registars offer services to bid on domains when they become available but it is difficult to get good domains.

Your best bet is to contact the owner and see if they want to sell it or find another domain close to it.

When you purchase a domain be very careful. Transfering a domain for money does involve a degree of trust between both parties.
To avoid the "you pay before I transfer" or "you transfer before I pay", scam, it might be worthwhile to use a reputable 3rd party Escrow service that *you* select. Don't go with a service the seller selects because if they are scammers, most likely their escrow service is bogus.

Just be very careful to make sure you don't get ripped off.
